Then, discuss about preventing human trafficking by addressing demand, including by the private sector. Most participants who responded to the questionnaire shared limited experience in these areas. The GAATW secretariat has very limited experience too. That’s why we decided to combine these issues in one session. We’ll discuss what actions participants and/or other stakeholders are implementing, and what is the impact of these actions

Facilitated discussion with:

  1. Graziella Rocha, ASBRAD, Brazil, on the dirty list of companies that engage in exploitation of workers in Brazil
Vani Saraswathi, Migrant-Rights.org, Qatar, on engaging with/campaigns among employers of domestic workers in the Middle East
  2. Emily Kenway, FLEX, UK, on the requirements for companies to report on measures taken to prevent “modern slavery” in supply chains under the UK Modern Slavery Act
  3. Essi Thesslund, Pro Tukipiste, Finland, on the harms of the end demand approach to sex work

Q&A and/or interventions from the floor
This session facilitated by Borislav Gerasimov, GAATW-IS and Jean Bruggeman from Network USA.

on the evening, discuss about Preventing human trafficking by awareness-raising: how, of what, of whom?
Awareness-raising is one of the pillars of anti-trafficking work and something many participants engage in. Too many anti-trafficking campaigns, however, are not based on evidence but on false claims and moral panics, use stereotyping and stigmatising images and try to prevent people from migrating or working in certain sectors. Furthermore, awareness without a call to action is meaningless.
In this session we want to highlight the process of developing a campaign – how a decision is made about a campaign’s objectives, messages, images, target group, etc. through the participants’ experiences.

Facilitated discussion with:
Betty Pedraza, Corporación Espacios de Mujer, Colombia
